FAQ's

  • What is the difference between a Transpersonal Arts Counselling session and a Counselling session?
Both Transpersonal Arts Counselling and traditional Counselling sessions provide the opportunity for you to explore your thoughts and feelings while working towards goals such as self-improvement, decreasing distressing symptoms, and increasing healthy coping strategies. Transpersonal Arts Counselling uses the process of making art in session as a way to communicate, rather than relying solely on verbal expression. Artwork created during these sessions provides a tangible representation of your experiences that we can explore further through imagery and words. In contrast, my Counselling approach focuses on working through challenges primarily through verbal dialogue. Together, we will explore patterned behaviours, identify false core beliefs, and develop healthier coping strategies. Through our conversations, you will gain insights into your emotions, thought patterns, and personal experiences, allowing for deep self-reflection and personal growth.
  • Who does Transpersonal Arts Counselling?
The short answer is everyone can, and that includes you. It is not about knowing how to draw, though knowing how to draw can be wonderful; it is about connecting to yourself in a unique way that provides new awarenesses, healing and growth.
  • What if I'm not a good artist?
Regardless of artistic skill, everyone can benefit from Transpersonal Arts Counselling. All sessions are tailored towards your needs and no artistic skill is required to participate in creative expression. The purpose of making art in session is to create imagery that will communicate your thoughts and feelings rather than creating something that looks “good.”
  • Are we going to include art in every session?
Creating art will happen as much or as little as works for you. Using art is a way of working that reflects who you are, where you are at and what you are looking to achieve. It is your process. Art is a vehicle to help you grow in ways you may never have imagined possible.
  • Is talking part of our work?
If you choose, there can be sessions where the entire time is spent creating art, though generally at least some part of our time together is talking. Depending on the work we are doing, your goals, and how you want things to go, it can be a greater or lesser part of the overall counselling experience.
  • Am I required to bring my own art materials or do you provide them for me?
Materials are provided for you in the in-person sessions.
  • Is it okay for me to have a session even though I'm intoxicated?
I have a Harm Reduction approach for people who struggle with addiction, so it comes down to your level of intoxication. Can you still hold a conversation? Are you safe? Are you coherent? If you are still able to engage with counselling, then yes, I will still hold a session. If not, I will cancel and reschedule the session. However, no substance intake is acceptable during the session, unless for medical reasons.
